Twitter sees through Human Behavior

Twitter Traffic

Number of Twitter users has been growing rapidly. If you think about it, Twitter is just an “upgraded chatroom” that lets you pick your audience and who to listen to. Why is everyone going crazy about Twitter these days? I think I can explain Twitter’s success with human behaviour and psychology.

To Share

We are all born to be buzz leaders. Human love to communicate, and most of all, we like to tell. When a baby is born, we spread the news to relatives and friends. When you see an accident happens, you want to break the news and tell as many people as you can. When anything special, or extra valuable happen, we always like to share it. Twitter lets you share things in the simplest and quickest way.

To make excuses

It’s nature of human being that we like to make excuses. There are million reasons (excuses) for us to like doing something, and Twitter makes it easy for us. Twitter is not like many other social networks, many people don’t like to be seen going on Friendster, Myspace, Facebook in school/ office, but not for Twitter. Twitter doesn’t give people impression being a “pure-fun” network for “meeting friends”. And people do actually break news from Twitter these days.

To be better than others

People always want MORE followers, MORE retweets, MORE @replies, similar to how people like to compare themselves with others; to have better branded clothes, own better watches, drive better cars, and in popular online games; to have higher level charactors, better weapons… Having more followers on Twitter became something to be proud of, and it increases engagement by giving “the feeling of success”.

To be lazy

People like quick and easy stuff. Twitter limits every updates to be less than 140-char, it makes people more engaged, and at the same time easier for the readers to quickly go through all the stories.
